Volunteer Positions | For Volunteer Network Members

Volunteer Positions

Upon joining the Donate Life Illinois Volunteer Network, volunteers can take part in one or more of the following roles—all of them crucial to our outreach successes.

  • Volunteer Area Leader
  • Donor Registration Volunteer
  • Office Volunteer
  • Other opportunities

Volunteer Area Leader

Each Local Coalition Leader selects one or more volunteers to serve as Volunteer Area Leaders. The Volunteer Area Leader works closely with his or her Local Coalition Leader and serves as a key contact for local volunteers. The time commitment is generally 8 to 10 hours a month.

Responsibilities

  • Attend Donate Life Illinois training sessions, identify and implement opportunities for local volunteers and stay current on new information.
  • Attend meetings, prepare meeting agendas and facilitate as necessary.
  • Assist with scheduling for donor registration activities.
  • Mentor new volunteers by taking them to programs or ensuring they are paired with veteran volunteers.
  • Arrange for local supply of donor registration drive materials.
  • Provide feedback to help evaluate volunteer activities.
  • Serve as liaison to Local Coalition Leaders.

Qualifications

  • Support Donate Life Illinois’ mission.
  • Possess excellent communication, organization and public speaking skills.
  • Have the time and ability to carry out responsibilities as described above, including travel to and from programs and events as needed.
  • Have access to e-mail and be comfortable with electronic communications.

Donor Registration Volunteer

Donor Registration Volunteers are the backbone of our community outreach! As part of their local coalitions, they educate the public on donation and register donors at scheduled donor registration events or through “virtual” donor drives. The time commitment is generally 1 to 5 hours a month.

Responsibilities

  • Successfully complete Donate Life Illinois orientation and at least one training session each year to stay current on new information.
  • Attend local coalition meetings or planning events during the year.
  • Encourage the community to register in Illinois ’ new organ/tissue donor registry.
  • Participate in at least four donor registration drives or activities for a total of 25 volunteer hours each year.

Qualifications

  • Support Donate Life Illinois’ mission and possess ability to answer general questions about organ, tissue, eye and blood donation as well as the donor registry.
  • Be confident, personable and effective in talking to people from all walks of life about donation and the need to register.
  • Present a professional demeanor and appearance.
  • Have the ability to travel to and from donor registration events for which you agree to participate.

Office Volunteer

Office Volunteers assist with in-office and administrative duties, especially during special campaign months including National Donate Life Month and National Donor Sabbath.

Duties may include:

  • Data entry, using Microsoft Excel or Access
  • Assisting with compiling materials for shipment to local coalitions and volunteers
  • Assisting with mailings and copies
  • Making calls to volunteers to confirm programs, trainings, etc.

Qualifications may include:

  • Familiar with general office equipment
  • Able to type and work with Microsoft Office and/or
    the Internet
  • Able to work autonomously
  • Dependable, able to commit to schedule and travel to/from office location
  • Able to lift up to 30 pounds

Other opportunities

For volunteers with experience or interest in professional public speaking and presenting, several Donate Life Illinois agencies also provide opportunities to volunteer through speaker’s bureau and high school programs. These programs may be selective and require an application/interview process.

  • Share first-hand the importance of donation.
  • Discuss what waiting for a transplant is like.
  • Relay the change that the gift of hope can make.
  • Address how donation can give comfort to grieving families.
  • Encourage students to discuss donation with their family.
